Day 1: Arrival in Chennai & City Exploration
Arrive at Chennai International Airport. Meet your driver and proceed to your hotel for check-in. Begin your cultural journey by exploring:
- Kapaleeshwarar Temple – A classic example of Dravidian architecture in Mylapore
- San Thome Basilica – A neo-Gothic church built over the tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle
- Marina Beach – The second-longest urban beach in the world, perfect for an evening stroll
- Fort St. George – The first British fortress in India, housing the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly
Chennai Dining: Chennai offers a wide range of dining options, especially around Nungambakkam where you can explore a variety of local and international flavours. Alternatively, many hotels also serve delicious meals, allowing you to enjoy authentic Indian cuisine right where you’re staying.
Chennai Accommodation: Stay in central Chennai for easy access to the city’s key sites
Mahabalipuram Dining: Mahabalipuram offers limited dining options but good ones, especially near Fisherman Colony.

Day 3: Day Trip to Kanchipuram (70 km, 2-hour drive)
Take a day trip to Kanchipuram, known as the “City of a Thousand Temples” and famous for its silk sarees. Visit:
- Kailasanathar Temple – The oldest structure in Kanchipuram, built in the 8th century.
- Ekambareswarar Temple – One of the largest temples dedicated to Lord Shiva.
- Varadharaja Perumal Temple – A significant Vishnu temple with a majestic 100-pillared hall.
On your way back, stop at a traditional silk weaving centre to see the art of Kanchipuram saree-making.
Return to Mahabalipuram for an evening at leisure.
Day 4: Mahabalipuram to Thanjavur (300 km, 6-hour drive)
After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive to Thanjavur, the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu. En route, stop at:
- Chidambaram Nataraja Temple – A unique temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in his cosmic dancer form.
Upon arrival in Thanjavur, check into your hotel and relax. If time permits, explore:

Day 6: Thanjavur to Madurai (190 km, 4-hour drive)

- Thirumalai Nayakkar Palace – known for its grand pillars and intricate interiors.
- Gandhi Memorial Museum – Showcasing India’s freedom struggle with rare artefacts.

Day 7: Exploring Madurai’s Temples & Traditions

- Koodal Azhagar Temple – A beautiful Vishnu temple with a unique three-tiered sanctum.
- Puthu Mandapam – A bustling marketplace inside an ancient pillared hall near Meenakshi Temple.
In the evening, attend the Meenakshi Temple night ceremony, where the idols of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar are ceremoniously put to rest.
Day 8: Departure from Madurai or Return to Chennai
Depending on your flight schedule, either:
- Depart from Madurai International Airport, or
- Take a train/flight back to Chennai for your onward journey.
